In what feels like a long time ago now, when I was living in Germany and had a Sega Genesis, there was always one game I wanted to play and that game was “Mortal Kombat”. Of course the only reason I wanted to play it was because I was told by my parents that I couldn’t. (And to this day it remains the only game I was ever told that I couldn’t play.) Then one day, my half Brother came to visit us, bringing “Mortal Kombat” along with him. I was once again told that I couldn’t play it, that only Ryan was old enough to play it. But as far as I was concerned, he was using MY Sega Genesis and there was no way he was gonna get to play it without me getting a chance. So eventually, I found a way to sneak into the room and play it with him. Once my parents found out, they were upset but by that point figured the “damage” had already been done (whatever the damage of watching two heavily pixellated sprites beat pixellated blood out of each other was) so I was allowed to continue playing it. I didn’t get punished often growing up, it’s true. But what I quickly came to realize is that, though the game was fun, it was no “Super Street Fighter II” (a game I already owned) so I didn’t end up playing it that much.
Whenever I would return to Canada though, I would beg my parents to rent a VCR so that I could rent movies and watch them. And at one point, for at least a year, there was always one movie I wanted to rent. And I’ll tell you right now, it sure as shit was not Jean-Claude Van Damme’s shitty “Street Fighter” movie. Even at age 8 I knew that movie blew. I always wanted to rent the original “Mortal Kombat” film. While far away from a cinema classic, it remains a fun and entertaining film with some very cool action. Plus, for a PG-13 movie, it was pretty violent. So I’d rent it every chance I got. (And let’s just forget about “Mortal Kombat Annihilation” okay?)
Anyway, I found this video online a couple of days ago, and it sort of brought these memories flooding back in. I was probably more of a fan of “Mortal Kombat” as a movie then I was of it as a video game, so the idea that a new “Mortal Kombat” film could look like this is pretty exciting. If you’re a fan of the series at all, give it a look.
